Richard is a Vietnam Veteran having served 3 years in the military. He and his wife have been married 38 years, have 3 adult children and 5 grand children.

He a graduate from Trinity International University and Northwestern University Police School of Staff and Command. Richard became a Buffalo Grove Police Officer in 1978 where over the years he has received several police awards such as: Police Officer of the Year, Police Officer of the Year Special Commendation Award and five times received Police Officer of the Quarter.  He spent several years as a Youth Officer and three years as the Sergeant of Investigation.

The 2004 Police Employee of the Year was awarded to Officer Ed Szos, a 28-year veteran of the force. Szos has been on the hostage negotiating team, has been a sign language interpreter and has trained police department personnel in the use of DUI testing equipment.

For the past eight years, he has been liaison to the industrial section of Buffalo Grove.
